The Analysis ToolPak

The Analysis ToolPak is an add-in for Microsoft Excel that comes with MicrosoftExcel. An add-in is simply a hidden workbook that adds commands orfeatures to Excel.

Typically the Analysis ToolPak is installed when one installs Excel. To see if this is the case for your machine do the following:

  • Excel 2003 and earlier: select in Excel the Tools Menu and the menu item Add-ins.
  • Excel 2007: Office Button, Excel Options, Add-ins, Manage Excel Add-ins in the selection box, then click GO
  • Excel 2010: Green File, Options, Manage Excel Add-ins in the selection box, then click GO

Both versions are available for Mac and Windows. On Windows, OpenSolver should work with Excel 2007 and later; we test it on 32 and 64 bit Windows 7/10 in Excel 2010/2013/2016. (Older versions worked with Excel 2003, but we don't test this any more.) On Mac OS X, it should work using Excel for Mac 2011 with any version of OS X newer than 10.7. To turn on/off the Quick Analysis feature, follow the next steps: 1. On the File tab, click the Options button: 2. In the Excel Options dialog box, on the General tab check or uncheck Show Quick Analysis options on selection: Note: You can also press Ctrl+Q on the keyboard to display the Quick Analysis options. This video will show steps to enable data analysis tool pak in excel 2007.

If you need to develop complex statistical or engineering analyses, you can save steps and time by using the Analysis ToolPak. You provide the data and parameters for each analysis, and the tool uses the appropriate statistical or engineering macro functions to calculate and display the results in an output table. Some tools generate charts in addition to output tables.

The data analysis functions can be used on only one worksheet at a time. When you perform data analysis on grouped worksheets, results will appear on the first worksheet and empty formatted tables will appear on the remaining worksheets. To perform data analysis on the remainder of the worksheets, recalculate the analysis tool for each worksheet.
